#10 Sustainable Coexistence – Transformation of Kolping Youth Housing in Cologne-Ehrenfeld
In this episode, we take a look at the “Kolping Jugendwohnen” in Cologne-Ehrenfeld, a former youth hostel nearly seventy years old, facing a major decision: renovation or demolition? The answer lay in a thorough analysis of the building’s structure and environmental impact, which demonstrated that a renovation was the more ecologically sound choice. The planning office Pannhausen + Lindener Architekten took on the challenge and transformed the building into a modern, energy-efficient, and accessible hostel, now providing a home for 73 young adults. The episode offers insights into the complex renovation process, from the renewal of the interior spaces to the energy modernization of the facade, including the integration of solar thermal and photovoltaic systems for energy generation, as well as rainwater harvesting.
