#12 Preserving the Heritage, Shaping the Future – The Renovation of the Mathildenhöhe Exhibition Building, Darmstadt
In this episode, I take you to the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, a centre of Jugendstil and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021. The iconic exhibition building, designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1908, faced the challenge of a comprehensive renovation while preserving its historical character. The Frankfurt architectural firm schneider+schumacher has masterfully met this task. The renovation included energy optimisations, technical modernisations, and careful restoration work, bringing the building functionally up to the latest standards while simultaneously preserving its historical essence. I speak with the project architect Astrid Wuttke about the twelve-year renovation, the use of an aerogel plaster, and the collaboration with the monument protection authority.
