How can an urban district redefine the relationship between new and old city structures? In this episode of Architektourist, we explore the Dorotheen Quartier in Stuttgart. Following the competition win by Behnisch Architekten in spring 2010, the architectural design underwent several significant changes during the planning phase. Since its completion in 2017, the district, strategically positioned between Karlsplatz and the Markthalle, connects public spaces and creates a seamless link to the urban space. I discuss with Stefan Behnisch from Behnisch Architekten the architectural integration into the existing city structure and how the project respects historical values while incorporating contemporary accents. Maximilian Ernst von Puren explains the technical aspects of the compact roof, which plays an important role in the functionality and safety of the roof landscape in the Dorotheen Quartier. Originally produced as part of the “BauTour Stuttgart” podcast series. This series was created for the DACH+HOLZ International 2024 trade fair. Developed in collaboration with the Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen (GHM), it offers exciting insights into six current construction projects in Stuttgart.
