#16 Multigenerational House with History – Reviving the Tettenweis Monastery

How can a historical monastery be transformed into a multi-generational home without losing its cultural values and special atmosphere? In this episode, we travel to the Lower Bavarian town of Tettenweis and take a look at the renovation of the St. Gertrud Monastery, which now brings together young and old as a multi-generational home. The project was made possible by the Hans Lindner Foundation, which took over the entire monastery grounds and developed the concept together with the monastery leadership.

I speak with Stephanie Lindner, board member of the foundation and head of department at the Lindner Group, about the vision behind the project and the challenges posed by monument protection and accessibility. Helmut Schaitl, managing director of the foundation’s senior care facilities, provides insights into the technical and social aspects of the conversion and tells of the intensive collaboration with the monastery community and the planning team.

We hear How it has been possible to preserve historical elements like the magnificent wooden ceilings and massive oak doors while simultaneously creating modern living and care facilities, a café, a day care center, and a kindergarten. The Tettenweis Monastery thus serves as a model for the sustainable and socially oriented conversion of historical buildings.
