#22 Decarbonization in Concrete Construction – What's Changing in the Industry

Titelbild für #22 Decarbonization in Concrete Construction – What's Changing in the Industry

How climate-friendly can concrete be? And what solutions are already available to drastically reduce CO₂ emissions from the concrete industry?

Concrete is the most widely used building material in the world, but at the same time is responsible for a significant portion of global CO₂ emissions. But the industry is changing. What strategies are there to reduce the CO₂ footprint of the concrete industry? And how far have we come with innovations like clinker-reduced cements or AI-supported production processes?

In this episode, I speak with Dr. Ulrich Lotz, Managing Director of the Baden-Württemberg Concrete Associations e.V., about the changing concrete industry and strategies for decarbonizing the construction sector. We look at the progress in clinker-reduced cements, which can drastically reduce CO₂ emissions, and discuss how prefabricated concrete elements prove themselves as a sustainable building method. What role do digital technologies and artificial intelligence play in manufacturing? How can construction processes be made more efficient and environmentally friendly? How can the industry reduce its footprint without compromising building quality?

Dr. Lotz explains why decarbonization is not just a technical task, but also a matter of communication and acceptance. Because the concrete industry is already undergoing transformation, but the public image is often different.
