Can a protected building be modernized without losing its architectural character? What role do material choices, color schemes, and technical adjustments play in such renovations? The office building at Börsenplatz 1 in Cologne is an example of post-war architecture: Designed by Wilhelm Riphahn in the 1950s, it impresses with a clear grid facade, skillful building volume staging, and its distinctive “fold curtain” of exposed concrete. But for a building to survive for decades, it needs not only architectural quality, but also forward-looking renovation. But how does one keep such a building vibrant and usable over decades? The Momeni Group took over the house in 2017 and launched a comprehensive renovation – from the facade to the lobby to the technical equipment. It was important to maintain the balance between historical preservation and contemporary use. I speak with Andrea Schäfer, colour designer at Brillux, about the challenge of designing the colour of a listed façade in a way that highlights the original architecture while also fitting into the present day. Also joining us is Marcella Billand, Managing Director of the Momeni Group. She gives us an insight into the modernisation from an investor’s perspective: What were the challenges? How did the collaboration with the monument protection office go? And why is a high-quality renovation a sustainable decision? This episode shows that monument protection and contemporary use are not contradictory, but an opportunity for sustainable construction and vibrant urban development.
