#25 Light shapes space – Individual lamps for the Beiersdorf Campus Hamburg
What makes bespoke lighting special? And how is a light sculpture created that not only illuminates a space but also architecturally shapes it? At the Beiersdorf Campus in Hamburg, light plays a central role: from the large light rings in the traffic areas to the striking light sculpture above the Center Bar. But these luminaires are not standard products. They were designed specifically for this project in close collaboration between Prof. Stefan Hofmann and Trilux.
In this episode, I speak with Prof. Stefan Hofmann from Lichtwerke in Cologne and Thomas Schneider from Trilux Architectural about how this light sculpture came about, from the initial idea to the final implementation. We discuss the planning process, the collaboration between lighting designers and luminaire manufacturers, and how Trilux, with its manufactory in Arnsberg, enables custom designs from a single unit. We also discuss the technical challenges behind the… inbar floating light sculpture, focusing on flexible mounting solutions, light dramaturgy, and the question: How does a luminaire work if it doesn’t look like one?
