Concrete plants, construction sites, and artificial intelligence – does that fit together? Yes, and how! Especially when algorithms help significantly reduce CO₂ emissions from concrete. This episode focuses on the Berlin startup Alcemy, which is bringing machine learning into cement and concrete production. Alcemy develops software that analyzes running production data and gives real-time recommendations for less clinker, stable quality, and more resource-efficient processes.

The focus of the episode is the EDGE Friedrichspark project in Berlin, where a new type of cement with only 30 percent clinker content was used, accompanied by Alcemy software and first building-approved. I speak with Hoang Nguyen, Head of Communications & Sustainable Construction at Alcemy. We take a look behind the scenes of the project and at the technology that made it possible. It’s about how concrete with reduced clinker content becomes more climate-friendly, which raw… How machine learning plays a role, and how digital tools can help mitigate the shortage of skilled workers on construction sites.

And we look at how planners and policymakers can become more involved in the selection of climate-friendly materials, and why there shouldn’t just be black or white when it comes to concrete, but many good shades of grey in between.
